The rural churches The Gallura since the seventeenth century is characterized by scattered settlements called stazzi, born mainly by corsican shepherds, who fled for political reasons or family feuds the neighboring island, settled in Gallura building their homes. Near these farms almost self-sufficient during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries rural churches were built or restored, thus becoming the center and focus of the social life of some groups of stazzi, called cussogghje. Some of these are certainly of medieval origin - such as the Basilica of Luogosanto, the church of S. Trano still in Luogosanto, the church of S. Lucia Bortigiadas, the church of S. Elena in Arzachena, or those of S. Vittore and Cabu Abbas in Olbia - while others were built from scratch in the eighteenth century, then becoming a rural parishes in the second half of the century.
