Luogosanto


The name derives from the Latin Locus Santus. Popular during the Roman period, in the Middle Ages binded around the churches of the Nativity of Mary S. Nicola and S. Quirico. He belonged to the administrative area of Montàngia or Montanea of the Kingdom of Gallura, of which may have been the capital, given the presence of nearby castles of Balaiana, but especially of Baldu, which was built by Ubaldo Visconti. When the kingdom of Gallura ended in 1288, Luogosanto became part of the overseas territories of the Republic of Pisa .
In 1324 it became actually part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, in 1330 the center with the former administrative area were conquered by the Governor-General of the Kingdom, Raimondo de Cardona, whereto were enfeoff the following year. When Cardona died in 1337, for debts incurred by his father, the daughters rendered the fief to the Crown, which in 1338 gave it to Raymond de Senesterra. During the first war between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Arborea the country was devastated resting unpopulated from 1358. Raymond de Senesterra kept the feud, however, until 1365, when during the second war between the two states, the territory was invaded by Arborea's troops, assuming giudicale institutions. Returned part of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1420, remained virtually uninhabited until the eighteenth century, although beeing the sanctuary basilica destination of pilgrimage from the whole Gallura.
